Blind Spot

I have been reading a book titled Incognito by David Eagleman. He begins by giving a history of our understanding of the brain and how it functions. He continues by explaining how sight works. The way our eyes work has always marveled me. Did you know we have a blind spot in our vision? Me either.

Apparently each retina has a blind spot where vision is not detected. I know what you are thinking. I thought the same thing. Why don’t we see it? Well, we can. Make the shape of an L with the first finger and thumb of both your hands. Touch your thumbs together. Close your right eye and look at your left finger. Now move your hands back and forth toward your face. Your right finger will disappear. Totally weird.

Because of the the location of the blind spot, it is not noticeable with both eyes open. Why is it there? He goes on to say that we don’t actually see in 3D. It’s more of a 2.5D and then our brains do a bunch fancy interpretations so we can see.

Every so often, I lose sight of the power and creativity of God. I become complacent. I lose sight of God’s deep compassion for his detailed, intricate, miraculous creation. Hearing everything our eyes and brains have to do for us to see puts me back in a state of awe. We are not an accident. We are not random. We are fearfully and wonderfully made.

More and more people are seeing this:
    they enter the mystery,
    abandoning themselves to God. 4-5 Blessed are you who give yourselves over to God,
    turn your backs on the world’s “sure thing,”
    ignore what the world worships;
The world’s a huge stockpile
    of God-wonders and God-thoughts.
Nothing and no one
    compares to you!
I start talking about you, telling what I know,
    and quickly run out of words.
Neither numbers nor words
    account for you.
(Psalm 40: 3-5 MSG)

What brings you back into the awe and wonder of God? Is it your blind spot? What reminds you of his deep compassion and miraculous power? Share your experience here and breathe life and bring hope to others.
