Be Creative

We don’t have to artists to be creative. I believe we all have some creative aspect within us. We just need to find what sparks that creative joy within ourselves. When we do, we will find reduced stress, reduced anxiety, more joy, and even an improved immune system. New studies show it acts like meditation in the brain.

One morning my husband woke me and asked if I wanted to take pictures of ice formations. It was spring not winter so I was confused. He confessed to leaving the sprinkler on all night. I jumped up and grabbed my camera. Photography is a fun hobby that allows me to tap in to my creative side.

I don’t have the time to spend on this hobby or any other creative pursuit that I would like to spend time on. However, I have learned it is necessary for me to make the time. Not only does it improve my mental wellbeing but also my spiritual wellbeing. I am calmed, more open and loving to others, and better able to handle what life is throwing at me. I also feel a connection with my Creator. It becomes a form on worship and communion with the great Creator.

So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:21 ESV).

For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. (Colossians 1:16 ESV).

It should be no surprise that doing things that bring me closer to Him also reduce my stress and improve my health. We get to experience this any time we create. Here is my list of ways I like to create. Many of them are simple.

  1. Photography
  2. Adult coloring books
  3. Planting flowers
  4. Redecorating a room
  5. Sewing
  6. Refinishing a piece of furniture
  7. Photo apps
  8. Creating videos
  9. Writing
  10. Cooking

Some of these might not seem like creative activities. What would you put on your list? It doesn’t have to be exhaustive just enough to remind you what gets your creative juices flowing, and brings a connection with God.

How are you creative? Why are you creative? Share your experience here and breathe life and bring hope to others.
