I was reminded today of John Wesley’s, founder of the United Methodist Church, story. He has a profound conversion story, but it is what happened prior to his conversion that I’m reflecting on. The phrase, “Fake it until you make it,” is a good summary of this time in his life. 

The phrase sounds harsh and insincere, but it can work. What did John Wesley do as part of his fake it practices? He prayed. He read scripture; scripture that told him of God’s promises and faithfulness. He guided others in those practices. He witnessed others having conversion experiences. Finally, he had his own experience that made God undeniably real in his life.

The best invitation we ever received! We were also given absolutely terrific promises to pass on to you—your tickets to participation in the life of God after you turned your back on a world corrupted by lust. (2 Peter 1: 3-4 MSG)

There have been many times when I have questioned my faith, wondered if it was real and wrestled with what it all really means. In the midst of those struggles, I have often faked it. Without considering what I was doing, I would pray and go to scripture. I was practicing faith even when I was unsure about my faith. I have not gotten all the answers I have searched for, but I have found comfort, peace and gratitude for unconditional love. I responded to the invitation to get to know God intimately. Later, in 2 Peter it tell us this.

With these qualities active and growing in your lives, no grass will grow under your feet, no day will pass without its reward as you mature in your experience of our Master Jesus. Without these qualities you can’t see what’s right before you, oblivious that your old sinful life has been wiped off the books. (2 Peter 1: 8-9 MSG).
