Hamster Wheel

hamsterFor me the hamster wheel is something that happens in my mind. It’s when I start thinking about something over and over and over again. Do you do this? Sometimes I just can’t let things go. In fact, that is me today. I can’t stop rehearsing a difficult conversation I need to have this afternoon.

In most cases, rehearsal is a good thing. This time the rehearsal is producing anxiety which is not good for my brain, body and overall demeanor. You could say I have been a little tense and crabby these past days. My husband and kids may have other words to describe my attitude, but needless to say my responses have been short, distracted and a little terse.

Why do we do this to ourselves? Does this conversation carry a burden of responsibility with it? Yes. But why am I so anxiety ridden over it? Scripture tells us to cast our cares on Him.

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11 NIV.

I have certainly been praying about this but clearly I’m not handing it over to Him. If I am, I keep taking it back. So I have started to walk my own talk and focus on His promises.

165 Great peace have those who love your law,
and nothing can make them stumble. Psalm 119:165 (NIV).

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Matthew 5:9 (NIV).
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27 (NIV).
The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. Romans 8:6 (NIV).
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 (NIV).
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7 (NIV).
Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:9 (NIV).
God you have a purpose and a plan for all things. I know this. I declare this. You will make all this work for good. I do trust that. I choose to focus on your scriptures above and not the hamster wheel that wants to run in my head . It’s all yours. I’m focusing on you. Thank You for all that you promise and generously give to us.
Will you join me in getting off the hamster wheel? I know it’s not easy. Share the scripture you lean on in times like this and we can encourage each other.
