Memorial Day

imageThis Memorial Day I felt compelled to remember all those who have fought for my freedom. I have a particular affinity for the 96th infantry, Deadeyes from WWII. They fought a bloody battle in Okinawa. This  book is a chronicle of that battle. Two of my favorite Deadeyes are Ivan Schulze (Dad) and John Schritz, his brother in arms. The more I learn about their experience and WWII, I am humbled by what others have done for my freedom, and there are so many who choose to fight for those same freedoms today. It’s a good day to pause and remember.

16 We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us—and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. 1 John 3:16 (NRSV).

I often wonder if I could do it. Could I lay down my life for another? I would like to think I could, but I’m not so sure. Could you? I want to encourage you to take time today to reflect on what others have done for you. We owe them that much.
