Wisdom is so much more than intellect. It is a combination of knowledge, experience, common sense mixed in with heart and the spirit of God. We often associate with age. Shh, don’t tell my son, but I don’t think age is required just often accompanying wisdom.
A few weeks prior to my son turning 18, he went missing in action. He was at work and expected at home shortly after his shift. Except, he didn’t come home. I texted him for his location only to get radio silence. I texted again and agin as time was passing. I broke down and used location services on his phone. I use this only as a last resort since, until now, this hasn’t been an issue.
Hmm, he had gone to meet up with his girlfriend. My imagination was off in a furry. The text messages transitioned from “where are you,” to “get home now,” to “Dad is on his way.” (I know you are laughing at me. It’s funny to me know, but it wasn’t then.) Within in a couple of minutes he finally responded that he was on his way home. (Yes, his dad was in the vehicle headed in his direction).
When he finally arrived home, he stated that he felt like he didn’t need to ask permission to go places anymore. I laughed out loud. Then we talked about respect, boundaries, and that maybe he’s not as ready to “adult” a he thinks he is as I reminded him that his brain is not finished developing, yet.
3 For I too was a son to my father,
still tender, and cherished by my mother.
4 Then he taught me, and he said to me,
“Take hold of my words with all your heart;
keep my commands, and you will live.
5 Get wisdom, get understanding;
do not forget my words or turn away from them.
6 Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you;
love her, and she will watch over you.
7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get[a] wisdom.
Though it cost all you have,[b] get understanding.
8 Cherish her, and she will exalt you;
embrace her, and she will honor you. (Proverbs 4:3-8 NIV)
Wisdom is a lifelong endeavor. He has a long way to go. Quite frankly, so do I. It’s easy for me to lean on knowledge. I need to remember to include heart and the spirit of God. Wisdom is wholistic. I can’t ignore one of the parts. God reminds me that without Him, there is no wisdom.
