Hurry up and wait

Hurry Up and Wait

Hurry up and wait

Hurry up and wait is a phrase my dad would use every time a car would fly by us on the road only for us to join them at the stoplight ahead. This happens in so many spaces. We rush to the airport only to be delayed. We rush to the clinic only to have the doctor running behind. I rush to get ready for church thinking I need to be there extra early only to check my calendar and see I’m not running the camera this week.

This happens in so many spaces in life. We hurry up and wait when applying for jobs. The wait after an application is submitted can be very long. We wait for test results. We long for family members who are hurting or addicted and need to make changes.

We feel a sense of urgency in our waiting. We want the answer now. At times I feel like I have earned a swift response from God. I even begin to wonder if He is paying attention to my cries. Waiting feels lonely.

Teach me your way, Lord;
    lead me in a straight path
    because of my oppressors.
12 Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes,
    for false witnesses rise up against me,
    spouting malicious accusations. 13 I remain confident of this:
    I will see the goodness of the Lord
    in the land of the living.
14 Wait for the Lord;
    be strong and take heart
    and wait for the Lord. (Psalm 27: 11-14 NIV)

I want the straight path. I want to be strong. I know I will see the goodness of God even through my doubt and impatience. I remind myself of the many times God has shown up big in my life and hurry up and wait.
