This Advent season, I was compelled to remind myself what I believe. It proved to be good for my soul. It all started with an episode of “The Voice.”
I used to watch “The Voice” regularly, but I have missed the last few seasons. This fall I have managed to catch a few episodes. This particular episode caught me at the end of an emotionally tough day. My heart was tired, sad and yet hopeful when a 14 year old begins to sing the words, “I believe.”
The power and conviction in his voice was chilling. I was captivated. The song continued, “I believe, I believe.” I was brought to tears, and began to pray:
I believe, I believe You love me. I believe You sent your son to die so that I might live. I believe Your word in scripture communicates truth into my life today. I believe You hear my prayers. I believe You are not indifferent to my circumstances. I believe You will continue to heal me. I believe you will continue to heal my family. I believe relationships have been restored because of You. You change hearts. You are the strength in my family and marriage. I believe You put experiences and knowledge in my path for me to grow in You. I believe.
I hold these to be true and remind myself of them when doubt starts to creep in. I remind myself of Mary, mother of Jesus, and her belief.
[ Blessed Among Women ] Mary didn’t waste a minute. She got up and traveled to a town in Judah in the hill country, straight to Zachariah’s house, and greeted Elizabeth. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby in her womb leaped. She was filled with the Holy Spirit, and sang out exuberantly, You’re so blessed among women, and the babe in your womb, also blessed! And why am I so blessed that the mother of my Lord visits me? The moment the sound of your greeting entered my ears, The babe in my womb skipped like a lamb for sheer joy. Blessed woman, who believed what God said, believed every word would come true! (Luke 1:39-45 MSG.)
Mary believed the impossible. She reminds to keep believing in the impossible. Recounting what I believe, reminds me to keep believing in the impossible.
What do you believe? Write it down. Share it here. Breathe life and bring hope to others.
