Immeasurably more

My sister has a way of reminding me that God can do immeasurably more than I can imagine. I am very logical and rational in my decision making. I crunch the numbers. I weigh the pros and cons. I try to follow the direction of the Spirit but with a heavy dose of analysis.

My sister who has spent her career supporting adults with varying abilities is looking forward to retirement. Folks who choose these types of careers are not in it for the money, so needless to say she was concerned about her finances in retirement.

She began praying for her current income to be able to be maintained in retirement. She genuinely felt that this was not a possibility based on previous conversations with financial advisors. She prayed for what she needed anyway. When she met with her retirement advisor, she learned that she will be getting $600 more each month than she prayed for. She declared it a miracle. It is God giving her immeasurably more than she could ask or imagine.

That is what God does and this is my prayer for you. I’ll work on leaning more on the Spirit than my rational analysis while repeating verse 20 to keep my focus in the right place.

14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family[a] in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your heartsthrough faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love,18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. (Ephesians 3:14-21 NIV).
