Worship more

Learning to worship more can be a challenge when I tie worship to church attendance. Worship is reverence, adoration and praise of God. While being part of a Christian community is important, if that is the only time I engage in praise and adoration of God, I find myself lacking joy, compassion and connection with God.

It is easy for me to fall back in to default mode and worship only on Sunday mornings. The truth is I am often distracted during church and my actual worship is minimal. Worship requires focus and attention. Thankfully, I have discovered several other ways to express my reverence for God.

Singing along with my favorite playlist is an easy way for me to worship more. I simply crank up the volume in the car on my commute and ignore the strange looks from those I’m passing. I find comfort and connection in the lyrics. Being outside also works great for me. Hiking, walking, sitting on the patio all allow me to take a deep breath and express gratitude. Believe it or not, exercise works for me, as well. Sometimes, especially when I’m wrestling with life, a simple pen and paper is perfect.

But the time is coming—it has, in fact, come—when what you’re called will not matter and where you go to worship will not matter. 23-24 “It’s who you are and the way you live that count before God. Your worship must engage your spirit in the pursuit of truth. That’s the kind of people the Father is out looking for: those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship. God is sheer being itself—Spirit. Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration.” (John 4: 22-24 MSG)

The struggle is to not slip back into default mode, but rather praise God in all things, at all times in full spirit focused solely on God. How do you worship more? What connects your spirit to God’s? Do you rely on church to spend time with God? Share your story here and breathe life and bring hope to others.
