God sightings are simple acknowledgments that God is in the midst of a situation. They can be simple and easy to overlook. They can be profound and undeniable. I have decided to track these sightings this year. I am excited to see how long my list will be.

The profound ones are easy to notice. I was concerned that I missing God in my every day life. I started journaling them. It sounds like a gratitude journal, but it is more than that. While I am grateful for each time I see God, there are times when God shows correction, asks for courage and challenges me to trust.

But I do more than thank. I ask—ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory—to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing him personally, your eyes focused and clear, so that you can see exactly what it is he is calling you to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life he has for his followers, oh, the utter extravagance of his work in us who trust him—endless energy, boundless strength! (Ephesians 1:18-19 MSG.)

My God sightings this year have included noticing that an old pattern of reaction didn’t happen in the usual situation, realizing how much I still judge, and still working on worry. To me, these carry more depth than simple gratitude. Maybe I am selling gratitude short. I am grateful that God continues to refine me even when it stings. Tracking these sightings includes both times when I am being refined and times when I feel blessed. Looking for God in the every day gives me a glimpse of His glorious way.
