In The Slow Club-Contentment

I am one of those people who is always focused on the future. I’m always preparing for what’s next. And of course, when I want something, I want it now! I can be easily frustrated by anyone who appears to be holding me up or holding up a decision. Does this speak to you? I can’t be alone in this. Do you find yourself wanting more, looking for what is next and feeling like your current situation is not enough? Do you struggle with contentment as I do? I’d like to recommend that you join me in the slow club.

Years ago while at the National Youth Workers Convention, I heard a message by Mark Yaconelli (click the link to watch more of the story). He was recounting the joys and frustrations of trying to get young children off to school in the morning. “Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go,” was his morning mantra as is mine. His son liked to dawdle, take his time and enjoy the flowers on the way to school. One morning, feeling particularly behind, Yaconelli was encouraging his son to, “hurry up, walk faster, we need to get going.” His son then turned to him and said, “I’m in the slow club.”

That was a profound statement from a young child. I immediately knew that I needed to be in the slow club. I need to take time to notice and appreciate the moments I am currently in and not so focused on what is next. I need to be content in the times when God says, “Wait.” Strength will rise as we wait on the Lord-right?

Philippians 4:12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want (NIV).

1 Timothy 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain (NIV).

I’m so focused on the future and worried about my timing rather than God’s that I forget to rest in God and be content in my current circumstances. I like to be in control and do things in my timing not His. That is when I need to get out my “slow club” t-shirt and wear it as a reminder, a reminder to smell deeply the pumpkin pie chi in my hand and be content in the moment.

God has it all under control. We need to be content with that nothing more-nothing less.
