John Wesley famously said, “Offer them Christ.” I was reminded of this quote, this week. When he sent his missionaries to the New World, he gave them one mandate offer them Christ. It was simple and straightforward. One I think we could benefit from still today.
Offer is the verb that signifies presenting something to another person, giving them the opportunity to accept or reject it based on their own judgment or desire. The essence of offering is rooted in choice and freedom—it is not a demand, but a gesture made with openness and goodwill. I imagine it as an action accompanied by an open hand, symbolizing the act of giving without expectations or conditions. The gift is offered freely, without strings attached, allowing the recipient to decide whether to accept it or not, without any obligation or pressure. It is a simple exchange, grounded in the respect for the other person’s autonomy and the generosity of spirit.
19 When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus. 20 When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.” 21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 22 Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”25 Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. (Luke 5: 19-25 NIV)
When we offer them Christ, everything else falls away. Restoration begins. God takes care of the rest. It doesn’t have to be forced or mandated. Jesus didn’t follow the rules. He offered grace. Love doesn’t force itself on others. It is an offering.
Do you offer them Christ? Do you present the gift with an outstretched hand? Has someone offered this to you? Share your story here and breathe life and bring hope to others.
