Who the Son sets free is free indeed. We are in the season of celebrating this countries freedom from Great Britain, and the many sacrifices to achieve this. It is a great time to reflect on the freedoms outlined in the Declaration of Independence. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness as detailed out in the first 10 amendments known as the bill of rights. The freedom of religion and speech we hold dear. I am also reminded of the greatest sacrifice. The one that took place on a cross.
34-38 Jesus said, “I tell you most solemnly that anyone who chooses a life of sin is trapped in a dead-end life and is, in fact, a slave. A slave can’t come and go at will. The Son, though, has an established position, the run of the house. So if the Son sets you free, you are free through and through. (John 8:34-37 MSG).
Through Jesus I have been set free from many things. Freedom from: Rage, self destruction, perfectionism, worthlessness, fear that I am not safe, fear that my kids are not safe, and the list goes on…
This all lead to the freedom to embrace and engage in life in a new and whole way. I now have the freedom to: Know unconditional love, share unconditional love, receive grace, give grace, know I am worthy, know all of us are worthy and so much more.
Who the Son sets free is free indeed. Letting go of the many things holding me down and choosing to trust that Jesus would bring a wholeness and belonging that I thought was a fantasy has become the best choice I have ever made.
It is easy to take freedom for granted including the freedom offered by Jesus. As we celebrate independence in the Untied States, I encourage us to also celebrate that who the Son sets free is free indeed.
