World War II Memorial

I was in Washington DC for the first time with a few hours to take in the sights. I decided to walk the National Mall. As I headed from the Washington Monument toward the Lincoln Memorial, I found myself in the midst of the World War II Memorial.

I wasn’t expecting to see it. I didn’t know its location. It gave me pause as does anything relating to WWII. I think about the horrific experiences my dad had in Okinawa. I think about the brutality of war in general. I think about the many sacrifices made by those who fought and those who kept this country going at home. No one was left out. No one was untouched by it.

The World War II Memorial carries this quote from Harry S Truman, “Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.” I think this is true for all who have served this country and given their life for my freedom.

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. (John 15:9-14 NIV).

Today, I remember and reflect on those who have given their life for my freedoms. I am grateful for the countless men and women who gave their lives in wars and conflicts so I can sleep peacefully at night.
