”You will be okay,” I heard it so clearly I looked over my shoulder to find the voice. We were sitting in a small consultation room at Children’s Hospital. A cardiologist has just left after telling us that our 2 week old son needed bypass surgery. I needed hope and assurance.
Curt had just told me that he didn’t know what he would think of this God of mine if our son didn’t make it. I was already praying, begging God for him to be okay because I couldn’t lose my son and my marriage. That’s when I heard it, “You will be okay.”
I wasn’t promised my son would be okay or that my marriage would survive. I was simply promised that I would be okay. I wonder if this what this mom heard when she offered up her son?
23 The king said, “This one says, ‘My son is alive and your son is dead,’ while that one says, ‘No! Your son is dead and mine is alive.’” 24 Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword for the king. 25 He then gave an order: “Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other.” 26 The woman whose son was alive was deeply moved out of love for her son and said to the king, “Please, my lord, give her the living baby! Don’t kill him!” (1 Kings 3:23-26 NIV).
Did God tell her something similar in the split second when she offered to give up her baby? What hope did she receive to know it was the right decision? I can only speculate, but I know that it was hope that carried me through. It gave me just enough to take one more step and then one more.
