I love a good road trip. Weeks of planning to find the perfect route, beautiful destinations, exciting hikes and places to stay. Anticipation builds and the packing begins.
Much needs to be organized. How much food to pack? What will fit in the car? How many days of clothing do we need? Don’t forget to be prepared for rain and pack the trekking poles.
The trip finally begins. Hours upon hours pass as we head to our destination. We take in the beauty of God’s creation. We explore the destination and take lots of photos to document the journey.
It starts at about the three quarter mark of the road trip. The excitement starts to wear off. The longing for home begins. I grow tired of being in the car. I long to sleep in my own bed. I crave the rest that can only come at home.
16 The Lord’s justice will dwell in the desert,
his righteousnesslive in the fertile field.
17 The fruit of that righteousness will be peace;
its effect will be quietness and confidence forever.
18 My people will live in peaceful dwelling places,
in secure homes,
in undisturbed places of rest. (Isaiah 32: 16-18 NIV)
Home is meant to be a place of rest. Home is meant to be a place of security and peace. It is where I go when I am hurting. It is where I go when life is hard. It is filled with warm hugs, listening ears and compassionate grace.
Going to my physical home is much like going to my spiritual home. Not everyone has a safe physical home, but everyone can have a safe home resting in the arms of God. God provides the peace, the listening ear and compassionate grace I need every time. Going on a road trip reminds me of the peace I have at home and with God. It reminds me that when I stray I can always return home. I can always rest dwelling with God.
